Screw efficient, be effective
We often use these words interchangeably yet they are radically different
Humans aren’t designed to be efficient.
We must be effective. Flexible.
Change is inevitable and we must be ready to adapt.
To roll with the punches.
Those that think efficient is the name of the game…
Are brittle. One unforeseen event away from ruin.
If we were efficient, any significant change could wipe us out.
Yet we continue to survive. Most of us adapt and, eventually, even learn to thrive in the revised environment.
It’s our greatest strength.
Businesses are no different.
While being efficient is great for the critical 20% that is responsible for 80% of its success, everything else must remain flexible.
Or some other business will eat its lunch. Sooner than you think.
Side Note: Just look at what Tesla did to the automobile industry. It came from nowhere less than 20 years ago and now has a massive technology lead. Part of that success is due to how vertically integrated it is in contrast to the rest of the industry. It was forced into that situation given it needed solutions that didn’t yet exist. Now it’s a huge advantage. It may be highly efficient in some places yet it strives for effectiveness at its core.
Curious about what your critical core is, let’s chat and discover it together.
